ROAD THEATER

The project ROAD THEATER, like the Road Movie, is about being on the road without a destination. It is about the dream of another life, in another country, a country of unlimited possibilities.

This takes place on two levels – one fictional, the play START UP, and one real, the theater-journey of German Theater Abroad.

The playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig has written START UP for GTA. Itis a black comedy, a quick farce. Young Europeans come to the United States and try to find their fortunes on their journey to the west. The play START UP is about the artistic reflection of this image of America, about the confrontation between American pragmatism and German idealism, about ideals and disillusionment.

With this project, GTA turns to the fly over states on the legendary Route 66. GTA will travel with the play START UP in a bus from East to West and perform wherever they find an empty room. The total project is a theatrical, transitory experiment. It will be accompanied and documented by a film team. The documentary will in turn tell the German movie audience the story of an intercultural theater tour.
